Anopoli – Loutro – Marmara Beach

This hike starts from the village ANOPOLI at 580 meters and it leads us over a rocky trail down towards the south coast. During this part we have some dramatic views on the Libyan Sea, Gavdos Island and the small resort LOUTRO that can be seen from an impressive altitude. After, we climb back up passing some ruins and a nearly abandoned village until we are above the ARADENA GORGE, which we will enter from the slope on the eastern side. When we arrive at the riverbed we continue walking through this spectacular gorge until we reach MARMARA BEACH where we are rewarded with a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea.

This trip takes us to the province of SFAKIA; a wild area on the Southwest coast of Crete. Our starting point is the vllage ANOPOLI which was the birthplace of the most famous Cretan Rebel during the Ottoman Occupation: DASKALOGIANNIS. The village lies at 580 meters, on the southern slopes of the WHITE MOUNTAINS. Soon after our start we are already rewarded with a splendid view of the Libyan Sea, Gavdos island and the bay and village of LOUTRO. After nearly reaching the coast we climb back up again to LIVANIANA where we can have a hort break for a refreshment or a snack. The trail leads through the highest part of this village and takes us to the eastern edge of the ARADENA GORGE. We enter this wild and rugged gorge from the side and will find ourselves right in the middle of it from where we follow its course towards the south. Our ultimate reward is the arrival at MARMARA BEACH where you can cool down in the crystal clear waters of the LIBYAN SEA and, if you wish, you can also enjoy a meal at the small restaurant in the bay. After our stay here we have to do one more short walk that will take us to the meeting point from where our transport back to ANOPOLI is arranged.
